The most useful voodoo fishing controls to learn first are the casting release, the context-sensitive G action, and the shortcuts for your Compass, Journal, and cooler. Several actions depend on what you are holding, so the same input can behave differently after a catch. This reference uses developer instructions and update notes reviewed on October 19, 2026. Follow your current on-screen prompts and saved rebinds when they differ from the documented inputs below.
01
Verified inputs at a glance
| Action | Documented input | Required context |
|---|---|---|
| Show Compass | M; controller D-pad Left | Navigation |
| Open Journal anywhere | J | No return to the dock required |
| Enter cooler selection | C; controller North button | Hold the cooler |
| Quick-select cooler items | Number keys 1–0 | Cooler item selection |
| Cut the line | G | Line is in the water |
| Throw a fish | G | Fish is in your hand |
| Release a mouse cast | Release middle mouse button during the forward flick | Documented mouse casting motion |
The table records specific published instructions. It does not establish every current default binding. Movement, general interaction, reeling, a dedicated hooking key, and the complete controller layout remain unverified in these sources. Read those assignments in your client before practicing.
02
Check prompts and rebinds before changing technique
Start with the action that is confusing you and compare its live prompt with your saved binding. A guide that says middle mouse button will not describe your physical input if you have rebound casting. Keep that distinction clear when following a demonstration or reporting a problem.
The July Dock Quota update says tutorial signage switches to controller icons when a controller is used. Use that signage to identify the next requested action. For an unfamiliar prompt, pause to inspect it instead of borrowing a default from another fishing game. The beginner guide connects these actions to your first trip through the swamp.
03
Release the cast during the forward motion
In the developer's October casting replies, the key instruction is to release the middle mouse button as you flick the rod forward. Timing matters. Repeating a motion while keeping the button held throughout misses the release the developer describes.
Practice the timing with a few deliberate attempts and observe where the bait lands before changing another setting. The developer also notes that the starting rod has limited casting distance, so distance alone cannot diagnose an input fault. Compare technique and equipment separately; the casting guide covers the release problem, while the rods guide explains the equipment side. The reviewed sources do not establish an exact controller stick sequence.
04
Check your hands before pressing G
The developer's March tackle guide documents two G actions: cutting a line that is in the water and throwing a fish held in your hand. Treat G as a decision that requires a quick context check. Confirm what you are holding and whether your line is still out before pressing it.
That check is especially useful immediately after landing a fish, when your intended action may have changed. Our practical recommendation is to separate catching, inspecting, and deliberately throwing into distinct moments. Avoid pressing G repeatedly while trying to work out what happened. Check the current binding if you have changed it; the dated guide provides the documented behavior, rather than a fresh in-game default test.
05
Select cooler contents while holding the cooler
The July 16 cooler update introduced direct item removal. Hold the cooler, then press C, or the controller North button, to enter selection mode. Number keys 1–0 provide quick selection. These instructions concern cooler contents; they do not establish a universal hotbar for every item you carry.
Open selection mode and identify the item you want before relying on a number shortcut. This gives you a visible reference when sorting catches for a sale or another use. Also expect a change of equipment state when handling the result: the August rig update says holding a fish automatically unequips your fishing rod. A missing rod at that moment can be the intended behavior.
06
Use the Compass and Journal during a trip
Press M, or D-pad Left on a controller, to show the Compass. The Compass announcement explains that it identifies areas as you enter them and provides a needle for orientation. Options also includes a toggle to disable automatic area updates if those interruptions are distracting.
J opens the Journal anywhere, as confirmed by the April Journal update. Older instructions describing a dock bookshelf are therefore incomplete as a shortcut reference. Use the Compass to establish which area you are discussing, then consult the Journal before deciding what to pursue. The map guide, fish guide, and bait guide develop those separate decisions.
07
Adjust Hookset Sensitivity and Camera Shake
If moving the rod triggers unwanted hook animations, the developer points to Options → Controls → Hookset Sensitivity. Check that setting before assuming the game requires an undocumented hooking button. Change one setting at a time, repeat a comparable rod movement, and judge whether the unwanted animation becomes easier to avoid.
For a steadier view while fighting a fish, use Options → Controls → Camera Shake, confirmed in the August accessibility update. Camera comfort and input sensitivity address different problems. Disabling shake can make the view more comfortable, but the announcement does not present it as a casting repair. No verified universal sensitivity value is available, so choose through observation rather than copying a purported best number.
08
Know what patch 1.0.1 changed
Patch 1.0.1, released October 16, added sensitivity text to control sliders, adjusted Hooking Sensitivity minimum and maximum limits, and improved casting and reeling on some hardware setups. Those changes matter when comparing an older screenshot with the current menu.
They do not prove every input issue was resolved. In the casting discussion, a player reported continued trouble after the patch and the developer acknowledged further investigation. If casts remain consistently abnormal, record your binding, mouse model, DPI, and relevant mouse settings. These are details the developer requested in that thread. Treat a DPI change as a comparison to report, rather than a guaranteed fix or a required number for all players.
09
Handle co-op actions and recovery deliberately
The Fish Club uses casting-style controls to stun a buddy's hooked fish, according to the July Dock Quota update. Learn the casting motion before applying it to helping another angler. Push-to-talk also exists, but the June update does not establish its default key. Check your current voice assignment before a session; the co-op guide covers the shared fishing loop.
Finally, Cooler Respawn empties the cooler and respawns it near the outhouse. It is a recovery option with a catch-loss consequence. Do not select it expecting your stored fish to travel safely with the cooler. Decide whether recovery is worth losing those contents before clicking, especially when carrying fish intended for the Fish Monger.
